Gotham FC NWSL, the reigning NWSL and CONCACAF champions, has officially started its preseason training in Spain as they prepare for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. The club announced this exciting development on Monday, marking the second consecutive year that Gotham FC NWSL has chosen Spain for its preseason preparations. The team will train at the Sotogrande Football Center in southern Spain for three weeks, engaging in closed-door scrimmages against high-quality European competition. This rigorous training is crucial as Gotham FC NWSL gears up for its first match in the Champions Cup against Brazilian club Corinthians on January 28 at Brentford Stadium in London.
Gotham forward Gabi Portilho, who previously played for Corinthians, expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament, highlighting its significance as the first edition of the Women’s Champions Cup. Portilho stated, "This tournament will be very exciting, and it’s even more special to take part in the very first edition." She emphasized her commitment to Gotham FC NWSL, saying, "But now I wear another shirt, now I’m Gotham. We’ll do everything to win."
In addition to the Champions Cup, Gotham FC NWSL is preparing for a busy season ahead, which includes competing in the NWSL Challenge Cup and both the knockout and group stages of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. The offseason has seen some movement within the squad, with the club signing midfielder Savannah McCaskill and forward Talia Sommer, while forward Midge Purce has re-signed for her seventh season with the team. However, there have also been departures, with forward Geyse returning to Manchester United after her loan and forward Ella Stevens signing with Boston Legacy FC in free agency.
As Gotham FC NWSL embarks on this important preseason journey, fans can look forward to an exciting year filled with competitive matches and the potential for more silverware. The club's dedication to training and preparation in Spain reflects their ambition to excel on both domestic and international stages.
